Veiled Obelisks

Bumbershoot Music and Art Festival, Seattle Center, Seattle, September 2-3, 2023

cardboard,

Veiled Obelisks is inspired by gravestones. Veil imagery on grave markers symbolizes the world “beyond the veil”. Obelisks have been a popular shape for at least five millennia. Originally they symbolized petrified sun rays but their enduring appeal could be due to their resemblance to human erections. Veiled Obelisks plays with this interpretation— here the monoliths reference sex toys or dildos ensheathed in a veil, and in doing so queers and feminizes this symbol of persistent male supremacy.
